We’ve discussed laundry in general before, but have never addressed white laundry in particular. First of all, your white laundry should be washed in a load separate from all colored laundry. Wash white laundry in hot water to remove bacteria. especially from underwear. Use chlorine bleach for your whites. This is normal, regular household bleach. The best way to use it is to use the bleach dispenser in your washing machine. If you don’t have a special dispenser, then mix your bleach following label directions, with a quart of water. wait until the tub of the washer is full and the cycle has begun then pour the bleach and water solution over the top. Be careful not to use too much bleach. While it is great at making your whites white, it can weaken cloth over time with repeated usage.
When using chlorine bleach, you must be very careful. Do not add it to the washer at the same time as you add the detergent since they can cancel each other out. Do not allow bleach to drip on colored clothes or the color will be bleached out. If chlorine bleach gets on your skin, be sure to rinse it with cold running water until it is gone.
Oxygen bleach is safe for most fabrics other than wool, silk or spandex. It is safe to use on colored clothing as a brightener. It will make white clothing brighter as well. Oxygen bleach works best in hot or warm water.
